The Riddle Book Club meets every 6-8 weeks on Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. The next get-together is Tuesday, March 9th. The discussion will revolve around the book The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society by Mary Ann Shaffer
This small charming novel begins in 1946, and single, 30-something author Juliet Ashton is looking for new direction. When Guernsey farmer Dawsey Adams finds Juliet's name in a used book and invites neighbors to write Juliet with their stories, Juliet is back in the path of war stories. The letters jump from incident to incident—including the formation of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society while Guernsey was under German occupation—and person to person. It is the tragic stories of life under Nazi occupation that animate the novel and give it its urgency. Juliet's quips are clever, the Guernsey inhabitants enchanting and the small acts of heroism vivid and moving. Everyone welcome. For more information contact the library at 541-874-2070.
Coming April 27th - The Help by Kathryn Stockett
This optimistic, uplifting debut novel is set during the civil rights movement in Jackson, Miss., where black women were trusted to raise white children but not to polish the household silver. Eugenia Skeeter Phelan is just home from college in 1962, and is anxious to become a writer. She begins to collect the stories of the black women on whom the country club sets relies and mistrusts - enlisting the help of Aibileen, a maid who's raised 17 children, and Aibileen's best friend Minny. The book Skeeter puts together based on their stories is scathing and shocking, bringing pride and hope to the black community, while giving Skeeter the courage to break down her personal boundaries and pursue her dreams.
